PMS: Pre-Menstrual Syndrome

In this article, we will look over different Pre-menstrual Syndromes (PMS) and the major cause for it. Towards the end we will suggest massages blend to help PMS and make every women’s health better.

Description
May begin any time from two days to two weeks prior to menstruation. Symptoms may include flue retention, breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, anxiety, depressor, irritability, sleep disturbances, food cravings, and other disturbances.

Aggravated by
Stress, lack of sleep, over-work, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet.

Recommended Essential Oils
Chamomile (Roman or German), citrus essences, clary sage, cypress, geranium hops (but not if depressed), frankincense, juniper, lavender, marjoram, neroli, rose otto, sandal-wood, vetiver, ylang ylang.

Methods of use
Baths, massage (preferably full body, otherwise head, neck, shoulders, or just back), vaporizer, dry inhalation (drops on a handkerchief), personal perfume.

Suggested Herbal Remedies
Diuretics: dandelion (decoction of the root), parsley, hormone balancer, chaste tree (available in tablet form under its botanical name Vitex agnus-castus).

Nutritional supplements
As an alternative to Vitex agnus-costus, pre-menstrual formula of evening primrose oil plus a vitamin and mineral supplement (marketed as Efamol) is widely available from chemists and health shops.

Further suggestions
Seek to reduce stress and improve diet. A professional aromatherapy massage now and again will help to balance the nervous system, and thus reduce or alleviate symptoms.

Sore or Cracked Nipples

Description
Common during the first weeks of breastfeeding, before the nipples have become ‘hardened’ to the effects of continued sucking.

Aggravated by
Continuing to allow the baby to suckle on the sore nipple. But there is no need to give up breastfeeding.

Recommended Essential Oils
Chamomile (German or Roman), rose otto.

Methods of use
Massage oil, aromatic ointment.

Suggested Herbal Remedies
Calendula ointment (available from chemists and health shops).

Nutritional supplements
A good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement.

Further suggestions
To allow time for the sore skin to heal, try covering the nipple with a rubber teat from a baby’s bottle during feeds. Baby will draw milk from the breast through the teat without causing you any discomfort! Purpose-designed nipple shields are also available from good chemists.

Vaginal Thrust (Candida Albicans)

Description
Fungal infection of the mucous membranes of the vagina. Symptoms are a thick white discharge accompanied by intense itching.

Possible causes
Antibiotics: they destroy helpful colonies of bacteria and encourage resident thrush colonies to multiply.

Also, the pill high sugar/high yeast diet sexual contact with an infected partner (men can carry candida but don’t always show symptoms).

Aggravated by
Wearing synthetic fibres against the skin (e.g. nylon tights, Lycra underwear) and tight jeans. They create a warm, moist and airless environment for candida to flourish. Also, harsh scented soaps and bath preparations.

Recommended Essential Oils
Lavender, garlic (see Nutritional Supplements), tea tree.

Suggested Herbal Remedies
Oral doses: nettle, black-berry leaf.

Nutritional supplements
One or two garlic capsules daily (garlic has anti-fungal properties), and take lacto-bacillus acidophilus tablets (yoghurt bacteria), or eat 300 ml plain live yoghurt a day.

Further suggestions
Drastically reduce sugar, yeast and alcohol consumption and follow a well-balanced wholefood diet. If symptoms continue for more than a couple of months, seek the advice of a holistic nutritionist.

AROMATIC OINTMENT

The following ointment will help sore and cracked nipples. The recipe suggests calendula oil as part of the base. This is a vegetable oil extraction of French marigold flowers and is available from herbal suppliers. In case of difficulty, you can use extra virgin olive oil instead. Beeswax can be obtained from herbal suppliers or direct from some bee keepers. If rose otto is prohibitively expensive for you, replace with three drops of the less costly Roman chamomile.

2 heaped teaspoonful grated beeswax
25 ml calendula oil
2 drops rose otto

Heat the beeswax and base oil in a heatproof dish over a pan of simmering water. Stir well until the beeswax has melted. Remove from heat and cool a little before stirring in the rose oil. Pour into a spotlessly clean glass pot and cover tightly. Store in a cool dark place and use up within two months.
